Seaqure labs secures over SEK 5 million to scale sustainable mycoprotein-based fish feed

Seaqure labs, a Gothenburg-based bio- and foodtech company, has closed a pre-seed round of more than SEK 5 million to accelerate the development of its sustainable, circular protein ingredients. The round includes investments from Chalmers Ventures, Almi Invest Västsverige, Propel Capital, SLU Holding, and West Coast Business Angels, as well as private investors.

Founded in 2024, Seaqure labs develops a fungi-based protein ingredient that can replace fishmeal and soy in aquaculture feed. The company creates a high-protein, circular ingredient that reduces pressure on ecosystems and cuts carbon emissions by fermenting sidestreams from the food and agriculture industries.

“Today, 92% of Baltic herring is turned into fishmeal. That’s unsustainable, and we aim to change it,” says Johan Henriksson, CEO and co-founder of Seaqure labs. “This funding allows us to run pilot projects with partners, validate scalable fermentation solutions, and establish a demo facility in West Sweden. It’s a key step toward accelerating the adoption of sustainable proteins in feed.” “Our vision over the next 5–10 years is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable protein sources in the feed industry. By using mycoprotein, we can reduce Europe’s dependency on unsustainable and imported protein sources such as fishmeal and soy,” Henriksson continues.

The company’s proprietary fermentation technology produces mycoprotein with significant nutritional and environmental benefits: high protein content, reduced land and water use compared to soy, and a far lower carbon footprint. Research behind the technology originates from the University of Borås and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

A fast-growing market

The global aquafeed market is valued at over SEK 600 billion and is growing rapidly. Seaqure labs initially targets the salmon farming industry in Norway and animal feed producers across the Nordics. The company also sees strong potential in pet food and even human food applications in the long term.

“What really excites us is Seaqure labs’ scalable production model, combining cutting-edge research with strong commercial drive,” says Oskar Svarfvar, Seed Investment Manager at Chalmers Ventures.

“Seaqure labs is a passionate team taking on one of aquaculture’s biggest sustainability challenges,” adds Ulrika Ågren, Investment Manager at Almi Invest. “Their solution is smart, efficient, and has strong potential for scale.”

From Sting to the global stage

Seaqure labs’ founders met at Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship and bring strong expertise in industrial biotechnology and aquaculture. Since its start, the company has been supported by leading accelerators, including Sting in Stockholm, MassChallenge Switzerland, and EIT Food Accelerator Network. The team has also validated strong industry interest at major aquaculture fairs in Norway and Scotland.

Seaqure labs is currently based at Sahlgrenska Science Park in Gothenburg
